C.M.A.H. - Helsinki EARLY MUSIC SOCIEty

About us

The Helsinki Early Music Society (Collegium Musicae Antiqvae Helsingiense, CMAH) was founded in 1977 "to connect people with an interest in Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music together, to increase the range of interest in early music, and to distribute knowledge about early music". If you are interested in early music, singing, playing or listening, you are in the right place.

After years of miscellaneous efforts our activities have taken shape into the following forms:

  • We organize early music courses and workshops. The most important of them is the summer course  held annually in July. The course is intended for musicians of all skill levels and ages. The members have a priority in registration if the intended class  if full.
  • Since 1982 we have maintained a renaissance ensemble for members interested in playing early instruments. At the moment we have two groups: Inferno and Cappella Tibia. In Inferno we play loud wind instruments such as shawms, dulcians, cornetto and trombone,  especially suitable for outdoor events.  Cappella Tibia is a softly playing ensemble using recorders, bowed string instruments and lutes, depending on the players. Singers join us now and them.
  • In 2020 baroque orchestra Amore Barocco  has joined us. It is open to everybody interested in playing baroque music.
  • We maintain a lending library of early music. There are music sheets and books from late Gothic period to early Baroque (1450-1650), both vocal and instrumental music. Most of them belong to the collection of London Pro Musica Early Music. Members are free to borrow the notes and the books from the library.  Whenever the economic situation allows, we acquire new books or music to the library. If you want to borrow some, contact Markku Åberg (cmah [at] cmah[piste]org).
  • We have a collection of renaissance instruments, mostly recorders and double reed instruments, that we can lend to our members. For more information, contact Markku Åberg (cmah [at] cmah[piste]org).
  • We are happy to perform in all kinds of events. You can order a small set of players or the whole orchestra. If you want to create the  festive atmosphere of the Baroque era, then order music from  Amore Barocco.   Contact Jarita Kuismanen (info [at] cmah[piste]org) or fill the form in the  Contacts page. If you prefer medieval or renaissance music, ask  Markku Åberg (cmah [at] cmah[piste]org) .
  • We have a formal meeting once a year and some unofficial meetings and parties.
  • We publish a (e)newsletter whenever concerts, educational opportunities and other important events arise. Our Facebook-group is  CMAH – Helsingin vanhan musiikin seura.
  • We keep in touch with other early music organizations in Finland and abroad. If you have some form of cooperation in mind, do not hesitate to contact us. We are a member of The Finnish Early Music Association (SVAMULI).
  • Our staff consists of Markku Åberg, president since 1977, and the board of members elected yearly at our annual meeting.
